Our Schools
Last modified: August 25, 2010The Capitol Hill Cluster School is made up of three distinct campuses and five educational programs. It serves more than 1,100 students from pre-school three-year-olds through grade 8.
Ages 3 through Kindergarten
Peabody Early Childhood Center is an age-appropriate, literacy-centered instructional program which provides a solid entry for a productive school career. Peabody offers a pre-school program for three year-olds as well as a traditional pre-K and Kindergarten program.
School-Within-School (SWS), the Cluster’s Reggio Emilia program, also works with pre-K and Kindergarten students. It makes its home on the third floor of Peabody.
Montessori Primary and Elementary
The Montessori program, housed at Watkins, serves students aged 3 to 9. Currently, there are five primary classrooms (ages 3-5) and two elementary classrooms (grades 1-4).
Grades 1 through 4
Watkins Elementary School, serving students in grades 1-4, is carefully designed to help students meet their academic goals without sacrificing their need for creativity and self-expression. Teachers work together to provide opportunities for students to investigate their world, answer questions, and inform others. In our primary program each child is able to learn, explore, and grow in a safe and comfortable environment.
The Montessori program, housed at Watkins, has two elementary classrooms (grades 1-4) to serve students who have been in the primary classrooms (ages 3-5).
Grades 5 through 8
Stuart Hobson Middle School, whose students are in grades 5-8, offers a unique curriculum based upon the treasures of our great national museums and the scholarly expertise of museum staff. Classes at Stuart Hobson cover a wide range of subjects, such as Spanish, Algebra, Shakespeare, Journalism, Geography, Music, and Art. Field trips are key to making the connection between the museums and the classrooms, so Stuart Hobson teachers and students are often seen taking full advantage of the facilities offered at the Smithsonian Institution and many other museums and educational venues in Washington.
