Kindergarten Plants a Tree!

Kindergarten students and Ms. Bloom, with guidance from four UDC Master Gardener/Casey Tree Citizen –Forester volunteers, planted an Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) provided by Casey Trees for the Peabody School Garden on May 12, 2017.

Some students removed protective burlap from the very large muddy root ball, added soil around the root-ball to keep it in place, and then constructed a small berm or saucer around the tree that will be filled with water during the growing season to keep the tree growing and thriving.  The volunteers also answered the many questions students asked about this tree.

This effort is part of a fourteen-year partnership between the Peabody Primary school and the UDC Master Gardener Program.  This partnership benefits the children who attend the school by creating and maintaining a nature-oriented learning environment.  The partnership also contributes expert advice on soil conditions for growing healthy foods, environmental benefits such as sustaining urban habitats for pollinators; and a place of beauty for the Hill community and visitors to see.
