PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Hello Cluster families,

This has been a week of changes at the Cluster. SWS is moving to Logan
and expanding their program and Peabody will be doing the same. I will
be adding a detailed message below about Peabody’s early childhood
program and its accolades and academic achievements. The modernization
of Stuart-Hobson is moving along rapidly with furniture and color
touches being made this week. As it stands now, we will be breaking
ground on the new gym this spring and on the new three-story addition
next fall. Be sure to take a glance at the tri-fold displays in the
entry at each campus. Congratulations to Watkins as they have been
accepted as a pilot school for the DCPS Study Circles Diversity program.
You will be hearing more about this exciting opportunity in the near
future. Congratulations to all the students who presented at Ford’s
Theater this week also!

Have a great week and remember you can always call me directly if you
have any concerns or questions.

Sincerely,

Principal Clemens

CHCS NEWS

Stuart-Hobson Student Kyra Smith & Science Teacher Anthonette Peña
Represent DCPS At White House Science Fair

After attending the White House Science Fair with her teacher, Ms.
Peña,Kyra Smith shared the following report:

On Tuesday February 7, 2012, I attended the White House Science Fair
with my science teacher Ms. Peña. When we got there we met Bill Nye the
Science Guy, who was a very interesting person. We were then led inside
the building after having our IDs checked twice, being sniffed by a
police dog and then going through a metal detector. Upon entry into the
White House we got to look at lots of interesting science projects from
kids across the country. I saw computer games, robot and new inventions
and was very impressed. Before we all went to the press room to hear the
President speak I also got the chance to talk with the astronaut Leland
Melvin. Then we were all told to take our seats. After about 15 to 20
minutes, the President of the United States walked in. It was just like
seeing him talk on TV, except he was only a few feet away, and I could
see the cameras filming him. He talked about appreciating the scientific
and academic achievements of children today and especially about hiring
and training new teachers to encourage and inspire students. It was over
pretty quickly and then the President was gone. Afterward Ms. Peña and
me walked around some more and saw some of the projects we hadn’t gotten
to see before the President’s speech. I also met the President of NASA
and got to explain my project to him and talk about how it was going
into space in the ISS in the spring. Not much later, we left, got
something to eat and then traveled by Metro back to the school.

The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program also has a great write-up of
their day at the White House here >>>

Winter Reading Program News From Peabody/SWS

With three weeks left to go until our Galactic Goal of reaching 200,000
minutes of reading here at Peabody and SWS, Astronaut Bloom is reporting
that we have made it about half way. As of a few days ago, the
rocket-riding readers had logged nearly *92,000 minutes of reading* and
several readers are already exploring *Planet Uranus* and will be on
their way to *Neptune* very soon! Room 10 logged enough minutes to now
be tied with Room 7 for the most minutes of reading and Rooms 5, 6 and 8
are all very close behind. Astronaut Bloom visited all classrooms last
Friday to show our minutes on the */Reading Rocket/* and to share
another fun solar system prize and she’ll make the rounds again next
week. Keep up the great reading and don’t forget to include minutes
spent in ANY book or literacy-related activity – that includes, time
spent visiting the library, attending a story hour, looking at picture
books by themselves, listening to a book on tape, etc.

Peabody Salad Bar Launched With Revolution Foods

Peabody Kindergartners enjoyed a very successful kick-off of the new
Revolution Foods salad bar last week. The salad bar is operating

disappear as quickly as they’re made!Parents who can lend a hand from
12:20 — 12:40 pm in the cafeteria can click here >>> to sign
