August 6 Listening Session Preview
Hello Panther families!
Please keep in mind our Listening Session that will take place tonight, on zoom at 8pm. Access information is below. At tonight’s event, our leadership team will share the progress we’ve made on our master schedule and class lists. Both are nearing completion and will go through rounds of feedback from teachers and parents. However, the main purpose of the event is for families to raise questions and concerns so that our team hears them. As I wrote last week, we do not expect to have many concrete answers to questions now, but we’re working with our staffs (I’m so grateful that they’re willing during their summer break) to make sure families have the answers they need before we start school. We will share this link again in the chat, but if you want to begin to list questions on this form, please do so. At or before the August 20 ReOpen Strong Event, we will share questions and answers.
As a parent, the schedule my children will follow is such a critical component. Here’s what we can share about the schedule so far. Homerooms and classes will be organized in the traditional Peabody and Watkins way: self-contained for PK3 and PK4 and math/ela teams for K-5. All students will also experience our inner core classes (“specials”) on a regular basis, both synchronously and asynchronously. Our Mental Health team will also follow a schedule for check-ins and small group Social Emotional Learning support.
Students with IEPs will receive their services virtually. We are prioritizing the IEP services of our students and the schedules of our Special Education teachers. Our team will be closely collaborating with parents on providing specialized instruction and related services.
One final important feature of all DCPS schedules is that Wednesdays will be primarily devoted to teacher planning, professional learning and development, and in some cases 1-on-1 check ins with families. Families should not expect a robust live-instructional day on Wednesdays.
We are learning a lot at Summer Leadership Institute this week. Dr. Ibram Kendi led the week off compelling us all to commit to anti-racist policies and mindsets and we had exciting sessions led by DCPS staff around anti-bias, mutli-tiered systems of support, and trauma responsive practices. You can look forward to hearing more about how Watkins and Peabody will implement those practices soon.
